This invention relates: 1) to a method of purifying fullerenes by recrystallization of a fullerene-complexing agent complex: and 2) to a fullerene-complexing agent complex. In one embodiment the complexing agent is selected from the group consisting of a calixarene, an oxacalixarene, a homooxacalixarene, a cyclotriveratrylene, and a cyclotetraveratrylene.
