Pain associated with myofascial pain syndrome is treated by administering to a muscle of a patient afflicted with the syndrome a therapeutically effective amount of a chemodenervating agent which selectively blocks the release of acetylcholine at motor endplates causing relaxation and atrophy of the treated muscle. The treatment produces a localized, sustained analgesic effect at the site of the myofascial pain source.
