ABSTRACT Surface defects in silica optical fibres are reduced by enriching the external layer of the fibres with silica bonded carbon atoms, the carbon being obtained by a chemical reaction directly adjacent the drawing zone. Volume defects are reduced by rapidly cooling the drawn fibre after first bringing it to the vitreous transition temperature. Apparatus is provided which allows the method to be carried out during the drawing process.
