PHN.10.466 6 5.1.1983 ABSTRACT: "Method of and device for drawing an optical fibre from a solid preform consisting substantially of SiO2 and doped SiO2" . Optical fibres are drawn from a solid preform which consists substantially of SiO2 and doped SiO2. After leaving the conical zone the fibre is guided through a space having a laminar gas flow to restrict the temperature drop across the cross-section of the fibre and in the direction of drawing between 1200 and 1800° C so that no extra stresses are incorporated upon cooling. A device for carrying out said method comprises a quartz pipe through which the fibre is guided after leaving the conical zone and in which a laminar gas flow is maintained.
