ABSTRACT A method of coating glass surfaces which, at least to a major degree, prevents the scattering of glass splinters and frag- ments upon breakage. The surface is treated with an aqueous or alcoholic sitane size, heated and a coating composition applied thereto, such composition including a hardener which, upon further application of heat, causes the composition to harden into a tough protective coating. The composition comprises a hydroxyl group - containing 1,2-epoxide compound and the hardening agent or agents comprise blocked polyisocyanates together with selected cyclic amidines. The coated surface is free from discoloration and other defects which have caused problems in the prior art.
