A method is provided for the direct cooling of synthesis gas in a catalytic exothermic reaction which is carried out in a reactor with one or more beds of a catalyst of a metal oxide catalyst. The method includes the first step of passing a reducing gas through the beds of the metal oxide catalyst. The catalyst is loaded between gas-permeable partitions without a space between the beds, thereby reducing the metal oxide catalyst to its metallic form. The metallic form has a smaller volume than the metal oxide. The total volume of each catalyst bed between the partitions shrinks, thereby leaving a void volume beneath each partition. The void volume constituting a mixing zone. The next step involves admixing the synthesis gas during its passage through the reactor with a cooling gas. The cooling gas is introduced into the mixing zone beneath each partition.
