ABSTRACT A method is provided for fabrication of optical fibres with non-circular core cross section using the ICVD technique, by depositing layers of material which vary in thickness around the internal perimeter of each section of a reaction tube so as to form a preform which can be collapsed to a non-circular profile. The non-uniform thickness can be obtained by varying the profile or wall thickness of the reaction tube, or by selectively shield- ing the tube from a heat source, so as to vary the tem- perature at different points on the periphery of the tube during deposition.
