A method of making an optical fiber having a strippable polyimide coating includes the steps of drawing an optical fiber through curable polyamic acid solution to form a coating on the fiber and curing the coated fiber. The cured coating can subsequently be stripped from the optical fiber by exposing the cured coating to an organic polar solvent such as acetone. A fiber having a strippable polyimide coating is also provided. The method is particularly applicable to heavy metal fluoride fibers, and to chalcogenide fibers which carry optical signals in the infrared region.
Procédé de fabrication d'une fibre optique pourvue d'un revêtement de polyimide séparable, consistant à faire passer la fibre optique à travers une solution d'acide polyamique durcissable pour former un revêtement sur la fibre, que l'on laisse ensuite durcir. Le revêtement durci peut ultérieurement être enlevé de la fibre optique en étant exposé à un solvant organique polaire tel que l'acétone. Une fibre pourvue d'un revêtement de polyimide séparable est également décrite. Ce procédé s'applique particulièrement aux fibres de fluorure de métal lourd et aux fibres de chalcogénure qui transportent des signaux optiques dans la région de l'infrarouge.
