The present invention comprises an apparatus and method for producing a biodegradable, thin-walled packing chip (20) from an aqueous pulp of recycled newsprint by contacting the pulp with a mold (40) comprising: (a) a solid core (41) having substantially the shape of the article to be formed and having a minimal number of holes through which air may be evacuated and (b) an air permeable, stretchable fabric (60) which covers the exterior of the core. After forming the chip (20) on the fabric through application of a vacuum, the fabric is separated sufficiently from the solid surface to cause release of the chip from the fabric (60). The dried packing chip has enhanced packing qualities, is environmentally friendly and provides a significant new use for recycled newsprint.

L'invention porte sur un appareil et un procédé de production de copeaux de bourrage (20) biodégradables et à parois minces, à partir d'une pâte aqueuse de papier journal recyclé, par la mise en contact de la pâte avec un moule (40) comprenant: (a) un noyau solide (41) présentant sensiblement la forme de l'article à mouler et comportant une nombre minimal de trous laissant l'air s'échapper, et (b) une toile étirable (60) perméable à l'air recouvrant l'extérieur du noyau. Après formation du copeau (20) sur la toile sous l'effet d'une dépression, la toile est suffisamment séparée de la surface solide pour que le copeau se détache de la toile (60). Un tel copeau une fois séché présente des avantages accrus pour le bourrage, ne nuit pas à l'environnement et constitue une nouvelle utilisation importante du papier journal recyclé.
