ABSTRACT In a method of manufacturing an optical fiber a bare fiber core portion is manufactured by heating and extending the core starting material. A fine granular oxide for a glass clad obtained by the method of vapor deposition is coated onto the bare fiber of core portion and then it is heat- ed. Alternatively the glass clad layer may be formed by passing the bare fiber core through a crucible containing molten glass and out of a fine hole provided at the bottom of the crucible. The two methods may be combined to give a double clad.
