Disclosed is a method for determining survival and relapse of a patient undergoing therapy for a tumor by determining a residual cancer burden index based on the bidimensional diameters of a primary tumor bed of said tumor in a resection specimen, the proportion of the primary tumor bed area that contains invasive carcinoma, the number of regional lymph nodes containing metastatic carcinoma, the diameter of the largest metastasis in an regional lymph node; and the fractional reduction in lymph node size with each added positive lymph node.

L'invention concerne une méthode pour déterminer la survie et la rechute d'un patient sous thérapie pour une tumeur, en déterminant un indice de charge du cancer résiduel en fonction des diamètres bidimensionnels d'un lit tumoral primaire de ladite tumeur dans un spécimen de résection, de la proportion de la région du lit tumoral primaire qui contient le carcinome invasif, du nombre de ganglions lymphatiques régionaux qui contiennent le carcinome métastatique, du diamètre de la plus grosse métastase dans un ganglion lymphatique régional et de la réduction partielle de la taille des ganglions lymphatiques pour chaque ganglion lymphatique positif ajouté.
