A catalyst for oxychlorinating ethylene to ethylene dichloride, having copper and potassium absorbed onto an alumina support. The catalyst having a partially hollow cylindrical shape with internal reinforcing vanes, and a diameter in the range of greater than 6.5 mm, a height in the range of 0.5 to 5 times the diameter, a wall thickness in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 times the diameter, and a vane thickness of 0.1 to 0.3 times the diameter. One method embodiment includes contacting oxychlorination reactants in the presence of such a catalyst. Another method embodiment utilizes a two reactor oxychlorination system, with the oxygen and hydrogen chloride feeds split between the reactors.
Catalyseur d'oxychloration d'éthylène en dichlorure d'éthylène, constitué de cuivre et de potassium absorbés sur un support d'alumine. Le catalyseur présente une forme cylindrique partiellement creuse, des ailettes de renforcement intérieures, un diamètre de l'ordre de plus de 6,5 mm, une hauteur de l'ordre de 0,5 à 5 fois le diamètre, une épaisseur de paroi de l'ordre de 0,1 à 0,3 fois le diamètre, et une épaisseur d'ailettes de 0,1 à 0,3 fois le diamètre. Selon un mode de réalisation, on met en contact des réactifs d'oxychloration en présence de ce catalyseur. Selon un autre mode de réalisation, on utilise un système d'oxychloration à deux réacteurs, les alimentations d'oxygène et de chlorure d'hydrogène étant réparties entre les deux réacteurs.
