ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of producing a preform rod for optical fibers. The method contemplates heating and sintering a soot preform to form a transparent glass rod, removing such an outer peripheral part of the transparent glass rod as has refractive index higher by 0.03% to 0.15% than the refractive index of silica, and covering the transparent glass rod with silica. The preform rod thus produced is drawn into a fiber with very wide band-width transmission characteristics compared with fibers produced heretofore. - 1 -
