Disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition for reducing tissue damage resulting from ischemia in a patient which composition comprises an effective amount of a sorbitol dehydrogenase inhibitor, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier. The sorbitol dehydrogenase inhibitor is for example a substituted pyrimidine compound, such as 4-[4-(N,N-dimethylsulfamoyl)piperazino]-2-hydroxy- methylpyrimidine.
