Abstract of the Disclosure This invention improves the quench efficiency of appa- ratus for tempering flat or curved glass sheets suspended in a vertical orientation. Such apparatus typically includes a plurality of nozzle boxes each pivotable about its longitudinal axis and adjustable in position to provide a pair of sets of nozzle boxes facing the opposite major surfaces of a glass sheet held in a quenching position between two sets of nozzle boxes. The present invention requires a minimum of power to obtain optimum heat exchange from blasts of tempering fluid applied against the opposite major glass sheet surfaces. This is achieved by simultaneously pivoting the nozzle boxes so that they oscillate in unison about their longitudinal axes a limited angular displacement from a predetermined, adjusted orientation at which said blasts are directed approximately normal to an opposite glass sheet surface portion through an angular dis- placement not exceeding 20 degrees thereby to optimize the heat exchange effect of the moving blasts of tempering fluid applied via the nozzles of said nozzle boxes against the opposite major surfaces of said glass sheets that are quenched.
