Methods and compositions containing a berberine compound or berberine related or derivative compound are provided for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, elevated cholesterol, and/or cardiovascular disease in mammalian subjects. The methods and compositions of the invention are effective for prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, angina pectoris, carotid artery disease, stroke, cerebral arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, restenosis following balloon angioplasty, intermittent claudication, dyslipidemia post-prandial lipidemia or xanthoma. Additional compositions and methods are provided which employ a berberine compound or berberine related or derivative compound in combination with a second anti- hyperlipidemia agent, or a different therapeutic agent to yield more effective treatment tools against hyperlipidemia and/or cardiovascular disease, and/or dual activity therapeutic methods and formulations useful to prevent or reduce hyperlipidemia and one or more causal or related symptoms or conditions associated with hyperlipidemia in mammalian subjects.
L'invention concerne des méthodes et des compositions contenant un composé de berbérine ou un composé associé ou dérivé de la berbérine, utilisées dans la prévention et le traitement de l'hyperlipidémie, d'un taux de cholestérol élevé et/ou des maladies cardiovasculaires chez les mammifères. Les méthodes et compositions de l'invention sont efficaces dans la prévention et le traitement de l'athérosclérose, d'une coronaropathie, de l'angine de poitrine, d'une maladie de l'artère carotide, d'un accident vasculaire cérébrale, de l'artériosclérose cérébrale, de l'hypertension, d'un infarctus du myocarde, d'un infarctus cérébral, de la resténose suivant une angioplastie par ballonnet, de la claudication intermittente, de la dyslipidémie, de la lipidémie post-prandiale ou du xanthome. L'invention concerne également des compositions et des méthodes supplémentaires dans lesquelles est utilisé un composé de berbérine ou un composé associé ou dérivé de la berbérine combiné à un second agent anti-hyperlipidémique, ou un autre agent thérapeutique, afin d'obtenir des outils de traitement plus efficaces contre l'hyperlipidémie et/ou les maladies cardiovasculaires, et/ou des méthodes thérapeutiques à double activité, et des formulations efficaces dans la prévention ou la réduction de l'hyperlipidémie et d'un ou de plusieurs symptômes ou états causés par ou associés à l'hyperlipidémie chez les mammifères.
