ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION METHODS OF AND APPARATUS FOR CONVERTING PULSE-AMPLITUDE-MODULATED SIGNALS INTO PULSE- CODE-MODULATED SIGNALS A method of and apparatus for converting pulse- amplitude-modulated signals into PCM-signals in accordance with an approximated logarithmic characteristic curve. In this process a partial coding characteristic curve which possesses a substantially reduced dynamic scope is firstly produced in known manner, and a second pre-decision is then carried out which sub-divides the dynamic region of the partial coding characteristic curves (TC) into two sub-regions in such manner that the coding of the lower and upper sub-region is effected with the same number of weighing steps. Thus, in contrast to the known method, the proposed method requires one weighing step less. (Figure 1).
