A B S T R A C T A method of gutting glass by scoring and snapping, with application of a gutting fluid to the glass during scoring, in which the cutting fluid comprises a hydrophobic, water-insoluble, oily liquid, e.g. a hydro- carbon oil or a synthetic ester of phthalic acid, diluted with a volatile organic solvent, e.g. a substituted hydro- carbon with a boiling point not more than 100°C above the temperature at which the glass is maintained during scoring and snapping, the solvent being also hydrophobic and water- insoluble and being subsequently removed from the glass by evaporation. The oily liquid normally comprises less than 20%, and in most cases between 1% and 10%, of the cutting fluid, being thereby extended to cover a such greater length of cut and rendered much easier to clean off the glass, while its efficacy in assisting cutting is substantially retained. A surface active agent, e.g. a coconut fatty amine/ethylene oxide condensate, may be included in the gutting fluid to assist in washing the traces of oily liquid off the glass after cutting.
