Methods for reducing fluid carryover by microfluidic devices including capillary element (102) and/or fluid motion. The capillary element (102) is typically fluidly coupled with a port, such as well on microwell plate (106), external to body structure (100). Capillary elements coated with hydrophobic or hydrophilic coatings to resist fluid carryover caused by a drop (104) are also provided. Microfluidic device handling systems are additionally included.
