ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to the toughening of glass sheets. A glass sheet is toughened by quenching the sheet after it has been contacted by shaping surfaces. Prior to quenching, for example in a chilling liquid, the glass sheet is heated throughout its bulk to a pre-quenching temperature which is higher than the temperature of the glass while it was being shaped. The glass sheets are for use in the manufacture of windscreens for motor vehicles and aircraft.
