ABSTRACT A linear prediction vocoder having improved noise immunity and error masking. Error masking is obtained in the synthesizer by extrapolating a pitch interval value, between the frame preceding and following a faulty voiced frame, and using the extrapolated pitch value, the reflection coefficients and residual energy of the preceding frame in replacement of the faulty frame. The preceding frame is repeated in place of the faulty frame in case it is unvoiced. The analyzer apparatus determines whether indicated pitch values exceed a predetermined threshold, to indicate that the frame is voiced, The threshold is raised if the frequency of the zero crossings is high, whereby the threshold is biased toward being unvoiced. The threshold is lowered is either or both the frequency of the zero crossings is low and the overall energy is high and the low frequency energy is significant.
