A monopolar ion-exchange membrane electrolytic-cell assembly comprising a plurality of unit electrolytic cells electrically connected in parallel to one another, each cell including an anode-compartment frame and a cathode-compartment frame with an ion-exchange membrane interposed therebetween, the anode and cathode compartment frames each having a feeding and discharging system for an electrolyte and a discharging system for generated gas. The anode comprises a first foraminous plate fixed to the anode-compartment frame so that the plate is close to or in contact with the ion-exchange membrane. Electricity is supplied to the first foraminous plate via power-supply rods and/or power-supply ribs from a power source located outside the cell. The cathode comprises a flexible second foraminous-metal plate, having good conductivity so that the cathode itself has a current-collecting function. One peripheral end of the cathode extends outwardly from the cell to conduct the electricity to the exterior of the cell. A resilient members biases the second foraminous cathode plate from the side opposite to the side facing the ion-exchange membrane, whereby the second foraminous plate is deflected so that the cathode is close to or in contact with the ion-exchange membrane.
