The invention provides pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment or prevention of the toxic effects of therapeutic agents and methods of treating or preventing such toxicity using a toxicity reducing amount of N- acetylcysteine either alone or in combination with a therapeutically effective amount or, to achieve its therapeutic advantages, an amount larger than what is customarily given as a therapeutically effective amount, of a therapeutic agent. The invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment or prevention of the toxic effects of therapeutic agents and methods of treating or preventing such toxicity using a toxicity reducing amount of N- acetylcysteine either alone or in combination with a therapeutically effective amount or, to achieve its therapeutic advantages, an amount larger than what is customarily given as a therapeutically effective amount, of a therapeutic agent whose side effects are made worse by increased oxidative stress or treatment related decreases in subject cysteine/glutathione levels or are otherwise relieved by administration of NAC.
L'invention concerne des compositions pharmaceutiques destinées au traitement ou à la prévention des effets toxiques de certains agents thérapeutiques, ainsi que des méthodes de traitement ou de prévention de cette toxicité au moyen d'une dose de N-acétylcystéine réductrice de toxicité, seule ou associée à une dose efficace sur le plan thérapeutique d'un agent thérapeutique, ou d'une dose plus importante que celle habituellement administrée comme dose efficace si l'on veut atteindre les avantages thérapeutiques de cet agent thérapeutique. L'invention concerne également des compositions pharmaceutiques destinées au traitement ou à la prévention des effets toxiques des agents thérapeutiques de traitement ou de prévention de cette toxicité au moyen d'une dose de N-acétylcystéine réductrice de toxicité, seule ou associée à une dose efficace sur le plan thérapeutique, ou une dose plus importante que celle habituellement administrée comme dose efficace si l'on veut atteindre les avantages thérapeutiques d'un agent thérapeutique dont les effets secondaires sont soit amplifiés par le stress oxydatif accru ou par la baisse des taux de cystéine/glutathion chez le sujet suite à un traitement, soit atténués par l'administration de NAC.
