A nanophotonic directional coupler (10) is disclosed for transferring light from one (12) waveguide to a second (14) waveguide. The directional coupler (10) is formed within relatively small dimensional parameters and can be formed to accommodate light signals of both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations.
