The invention provides a crystalline type L zeolite reforming catalyst comprising cylindrically shaped crystals having a length of 0.6 microns or less and an average length:diameter ratio of less than about 0.5, the catalyst containing at least one Group VIII metal and from about 0.1 to 2 wt.% halogen, e.g., chlorine. Also provided is a method for activating or regenerating the catalyst wherein a fresh or de-coked catalyst is oxychlorinated, purged to remove excess chlorine and reduced. The catalysts are particularly useful for the reforming of C6 to C11 napththas to produce reformates having a high content of C6 to C8 light aromatics and a reduced content of heavier C9 and C10 aromatics.

L'invention concerne un catalyseur de reformage à zéolithe cristalline de type L comprenant des cristaux cylindriques dont la longueur est inférieure ou égale à 0,6 micron, pour un rapport moyen longueur/diamètre inférieur à environ 0,5. Le catalyseur renferme au moins un métal du groupe VIII et environ 0,1 à 2 %, en poids, d'halogène (par exemple, chlore). L'invention concerne aussi un procédé d'activation ou de régénération du catalyseur, consistant à oxychlorer un catalyseur neuf ou décoké, puis à opérer sur lui une purge visant à éliminer le chlore en excès et ensuite une réduction. Ce type de catalyseur est particulièrement utile pour le reformage des naphthas C¿6? à C¿11?, de manière à obtenir des réformats à haute teneur en aromatiques légers C¿6? à C¿8? et à teneur réduite en aromatiques plus lourds C¿9? et C¿10? .
