ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cartridge-type tape drive for data storage applications whose componentry and structural organization provides for small overall physical size and particularly small profile (height), including resiliently-biased means for automated cartridge loading and unloading, a geared head-positioning mechanism which transmits motion through one or more angles in order to help achieve the desired low profile, and a tape-driving mechanism which includes a pivotally-mounted capstan coupled to a drive motor through a flexible belt of at least limited resiliency, together with novel cartridge-presence detection means and head position-detecting means, in the form of sensing elements which actuate switches to provide electrical indication signals. Preferably, the cartridge loading and unloading means includes cam elements disposed on each side of the cartridge loading path and having cam lobes that move in a horizontal plane to contact edges of the cartridge intended by the manufacturer for vertically-moving members, to further help achieve small physical size in the drive. The head-positioning gear mechanism preferably includes a worm-gear drive of novel configuration.
