An isolated nucleic acid molecule cloned from Artemisia annua encodes an alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh1). Artemisia annua Adh1 enzymatically oxidizes artemisinic alcohol to artemisinic aldehyde. The nucleic acid molecule, and the enzyme encoded thereby, may be used in processes to produce artemisinic aldehyde, dihydroartemsinic aldehyde, artemisinic acid and/or dihydroartemisinic acid in a host cell. Artemisinic aldehyde, dihydroartemsinic aldehyde, artemisinic acid and/or dihydroartemisinic acid can be chemically converted to the antimalarial compound artemisinin.
L'invention porte sur une molécule d'acide nucléique isolée clonée à partir d'Artemisia annua codant pour une alcool déshydrogénase (Adh1). L'Adh1 d'Artemisia annua oxyde de façon enzymatique l'alcool artémisinique en aldéhyde artémisinique. La molécule d'acide nucléique, et l'enzyme codée par celle-ci, peuvent être utilisées dans des procédés pour produire de l'aldéhyde artémisinique, de l'aldéhyde dihydroartémisinique, de l'acide artémisinique et/ou de l'acide dihydroartémisinique dans une cellule hôte. L'aldéhyde artémisinique, l'aldéhyde dihydroartémisinique, l'acide artémisinique et/ou l'acide dihydroartémisinique peuvent être chimiquement convertis pour obtenir le composé antipaludique artémisinine.
