S-2-21961M/KK/79 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical fiber composed of a clad glass comprising mainly quartz glass and a core glass comprising mainly quartz glass having a higher refractive index than the clad glass, wherein the core glass is a quartz glass containing GeO2 and at least one dopant selected from the group consisting of P2O5, B2O3, TiO2, Al2O3, SiF4 and Ga2O3 the amount of GeO2 being less than about 15% by weight and the total amount of GeO2 and the other dopants being about 15% by weight or more. The optical fiber disclosed is an improved optical fiber having a wide transmission band and low transmission loss, which improved optical fiber can withstand the stresses accompanying thermal expansion,
