Disclosed are methods for reducing polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode fiber by spinning the fiber during the drawing process in accordance with a spin function having sufficient harmonic content to achieve low levels of PMD for commercial fibers for which the beat lengths of the fibers, including the beat lengths of different portions of the fibers, are available and thus not readily known in advance. The spin functions disclosed take advantage of certain resonances in energy transfer between polarization modes to achieve substantial reductions in PMD for a wide range of beat lengths. Examples of suitable spin functions include frequency-modulated and amplitude-modulated sine waves.

Cette invention se rapporte à des procédés pour réduire la dispersion en mode de polarisation (DMD) dans une fibre monomode, en imprimant à ladite fibre pendant le processus d'étirage un spin qui dépend d'une fonction de spin ayant un contenu en harmoniques suffisant pour produire des niveaux faibles de DMP pour des fibres commerciales pour lesquelles les longueurs de battement des fibres, y compris des longueurs de battement de différentes parties des fibres, sont disponibles et, par conséquent, difficilement connues à l'avance. Les fonctions de spin présentées tirent profit de certaines résonances dans le transfert d'énergie entre les modes de polarisation, pour produire des réductions substantielles de la DMP pour une large gamme de longueurs de battement. Comme exemples de fonctions de spin appropriées, on trouve des ondes sinusoïdales modulées en fréquence et modulées en amplitude.
