ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The bore of a glass tube is coated with a first layer of cladding glass of equal or higher refractive index than that of the tube and a second layer of core glass of higher refractive index than that of the first layer. The coated tube is then drawn into a fibre while collaps- ing the bore to form a solid core surrounded by cladding. An r.f. glow discharge vapor reaction with particular reagents in the tube produces the desired coating and provides reduced contamination. - 1 -
