ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A thermoplastic packing material in the form of a web of foamed plastic having a cellular structure with closed, thin- walled cells, the cells having a lenticular shape, the cells being arranged with their longitudinal axes parallel to each other. The material is formed by extruding a molten plastic in tube or sheet form and containing a liquid having a low boiling point, and then subjecting the material to monoaxial or biaxial stretching, whereby the spherical cells formed by extrusion of the material are elongated.
