Abstract: A permanent magnet field DC machine comprises a rotor and a stator. The rotor comprises an armature core, an armature winding, and a commutator. The stator com- prises a yoke, permanent magnets disposed on the inner periphery of the yoke, and magnetic pole pieces inter- posed between the yoke and a portion of each magnetic pole. The magnetic pole pieces is made of a material the permeability of which is greater than that of the permanent magnets. The arrangement enables the machine, when used as a motor, to generate an increased starting torque and to rotate at higher speed under low load, than has been possible with conventional machines of this type.
