A pH measuring electrode includes a probe having two lumens with adjacent first ends. An exposed sensor electrode is secured to the end of one of the lumens. A conductor leads through the first lumen from the sensor electrode for connection to a meter for indicating pH. An electrical reference, for example a fibrous thread extends along the second lumen and is electrically connected to the meter. A porous plug closes the end of the second lumen adjacent the sensor electrode and is electrically connected to the thread. When the thread is saturated with an electrolyte it acts as a salt bridge that can be connected to a reference half cell in the system. The close spacing of the bridge and the sensor electrode is desirable to ensure a quick response and to minimize drift. A chamber may be secured to the tube, with the reference thread extending into the chamber. For use, the chamber and the thread carrying lumen are filled with an electrolytic gel. To provide adequate shelf life, this gel may be injected shortly before use through an access port provided in the chamber for that purpose.
