The present invention is directed to a new class of piperidinyl imidazoles of the formula: Image wherein X is represented by CO or CHOH; m is an integer from 1 to 5, R1 is hydrogen or a C1-4 alkyl and Y is rep- resented by an aryl substituent of the formulae: Image in which R is a monovalent substituent and is represented by a C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, halogen and hydrogen, or R is a divalent substituent and is represented by a 3,4-methyl- enedioxy or a 3,4-ethylenedioxy group; or a pharmaceuti- cally acceptable acid addition salt thereof; and to pharma- ceutical compositions containing said compounds which are useful in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia in a patient.
