A planar display apparatus comprises an electron emission source for emitting electrons to a phosphor screen provided on the inside of a sealed container, a surface insulated substrate disposed between the electron emission source and the phosphor screen and provided with a plurality of electron-passing holes extending through the surface insulated substrate, each of the electron- passing holes having an inner wall surface forming a part of the surface insulated substrate, and control electrodes composed of a plurality of separate conductive films which are formed on the surface insulated substrate and to which a passing electron controlling potential is applied, the inner wall surfaces of each of the electron- passing holes having conductive film thereon and a portion of the surface insulated substrate in the electron-passing holes being exposed to electrically isolate conductive film at opposed ends of the electron-passing holes.
