A plate installing device for installing identification plates on poles such as the poles used to carry electrical cables. The device allows installation of the plates at relatively high distances from the ground without necessitating a ladder. The device as an elongated handle. A plate holder is fixed to the handle. The plate holder has a substantially rectangular base wall. The base wall defines a pair of longitudinal edges. The base wall has a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the handle. A pair of spacing walls extend integrally and perpendicularly from the longitudinal edges of the base wall. A pair of retaining walls extend integrally and perpendicularly from the retaining walls. the retaining walls extend inwardly towards each other in a plain substantially parallel to the base wall. The retaining walls are spaced from the base wall by the spacing walls, thus defining a pair of longitudinal retaining slots extending longitudinally along the longitudinal edges of the base walls. A plate having nails extending perpendicularly therefrom is slidably inserted in the slots. the device is then grasped by its handle and swung so that the nails are diven into a surface. The device is then pulled so that the plate is extracted from the slots.
