Abstract of the Disclosure: A highly modified polyphenylene sulfide (hereinafter refer to as "PPS") which contains covalently bonded chlorine in a far less amount than conventional PPS's and is substan- tially free from ionically bonded chlorine and sodium, is produced by heat-treating a conventional PPS with at least one of organic, sulfur-containing compounds in a solvent capable of dissolving the PPS. Such a PPS is very useful as a coating or encapsulating material for electrical and electronic components, etc.
