ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a porous oxide diaphragm for alkaline electrolysis, in particular water electrolysis. The diaphragm is inexpensive to produce compared to some prior art diaphragms and it is simple to manufacture. Sintering is not required. To make the diaphragm, a metal powder slurried in a volatile medium is applied onto a permeable, framework-forming support and the volatile medium is separated out. The metal powder is compressed and then oxidized at about 1000°C in an oxygen-containing gas.
