ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a method and apparatus for detecting power failures and effecting either a programmed stop or emergency stop of the apparatus, whichever is more appropriate. Similarly failure of the synchronizing mechanisms are detected and, for example, an emergency stop effected. Provisions are also made for initializing the positions of the elements for restarting of the apparatus.
