A method and apparatus for reducing power consumption of an auto-negotiating ethernet transceiver by enabling a driver for the transceiver to alternate between a typical higher-power energy consumption mode (12) to a lower-power energy consumption mode (26) when a network link is no longer detected by the transceiver. The driver causes the portable computer to send instructions to the ethernet transceiver so that the transceiver continues to check for the network link (16). If the network link (16) is not detected, the driver causes the ethernet transceiver to power down into a lower power consumption mode (26) for a specific period of time (28). After the period of time has elapsed, the driver causes the ethernet transceiver to enter a normal higher power consumption mode (32) during which the ethernet transceiver again checks for the network link (16).
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de diminuer la consommation d'énergie d'un émetteur/récepteur Ethernet d'auto-négociation, le procédé de cette invention consistant à permettre au module de commande de cet émetteur/récepteur de passer du mode traditionnel de consommation d'énergie élevée (12) à un mode de faible consommation d'énergie (26), une fois qu'une liaison réseau n'est plus détectée par ledit émetteur/récepteur. Ce module de commande ordonne à un ordinateur portable d'envoyer des instructions à l'émetteur/récepteur Ethernet, de sorte que celui-ci continue à contrôler ladite liaison réseau (16). Si celle-ci n'est plus détectée, le module de commande ordonne audit émetteur/récepteur Ethernet de passer à un mode de faible consommation d'énergie (26), pendant un certain laps de temps (28). Une fois ce laps de temps écoulé, le module de commande ordonne à l'émetteur/récepteur Ethernet de fonctionner selon un mode de consommation d'énergie normale (32), cet émetteur/récepteur Ethernet pouvant alors à nouveau contrôler ladite liaison réseau (16).
