ABSTRACT A method for treating a sugar syrup to neutralize, decolonize and decalcify the sugar syrup during the clarification and decolonization process of sugar refining comprises contacting a sugar syrup with a neutralizing precut filter layer disposed on a porous support means. The precut filter layer comprises a liquid slurry constituted by an aqueous suspension of fibrous filter aid material and a neutralizing amount of particulate, crystalline alumino-siliate molecular sieve having an average particle size of less than 10 microns.
