- 15 - Abstract of the Disclosure: A process for the prepara- tion of 1-hydroxymethyloxiranes which are Z-substituted in the 2-position, of the general formulae I and ent-I Image and Image (I) (ent-I) where A and B independently of one another are each C1- C4-alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl or diphenyl or are each phenyl which is substituted by one to three radicals from the group consisting of halogen, C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy, C1- C4-haloalkyl, nitro and phenoxy, by reacting a ketone of the general formula II Image (II) where A and B have the abovementioned meanings and X is a group which can be eliminated under the reaction con- ditions, with trimethylsulfonium methylsulfate and a suitable base or with dimethyloxosulfonium methylide, and novel ketones of the general formula II' (II') Image where A' is phenyl or 4-fluorophenyl, B' is 2-fluoro- phenyl, 2-chlorophenyl, 2-bromophenyl or 2-trifluoro- methylphenyl and X' is hydroxyl or a leaving group, with the proviso that B' is not 2-chlorophenyl when A' is phenyl is described.
