O.Z. 0050/42888 Abstract of the Disclosures A process for the preparation of 4-hydroxymethyltetrahydropyrans of the formula I Image (I) where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, C1- to C12-alkyl, C3- to C8-cycloalkyl, aryl or C7- to C20-aralkyl, comprises reacting a tetrshydropyrancarboxylic ester of the formula II Image (II) where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are as defined above, and R5 is hydrogen or C1- to C12-alkyl, at from 50 to 400°C and at from 1 to 400 bar in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst.
