ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A source is disclosed for providing one or more metal compounds, into MCVD. The source takes the form of an inert, solid, porous sponge impregnated with at least one metal compound. In use, the sponge is placed in a substrate tube upstream of a deposition zone and heated to volatilize the impregnant into the reaction stream. The doped substrate tube is thereafter collapsed to a solid rod which is drawn into fibre.
