ABSTRACT Overbased magnesium phenate compositions are pre- pared by reacting magnesium oxide in a diluent with: (1) a hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol and/or a sulfurized hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol, (2) an ammonium sulfo- nate, (3) a monohydric alcohol of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and (4) water; removing the alcohol; and treating the resulting material with carbon dioxide.
