A B S T R A C T Subject of the invention is a process and apparatus for the production of volumetrically expanded covert as well as a volumetrically expanded covert. The essence of the process is that the feather is subjected to preparation as necessary, followed by expansion, in the course of which assorting cutting is performed so that only the elementary fibres shorter than 10 mm can leave the cutting space. The volumetrically expanded covert is character- ized in that its volume is 10-80 times the one prior to the expansion, it is the disordered cottony mass of homogeneous elementary fibres, their thickness is 1-5 micron, 92-98 % of the fibres are 5-10 mm long, becoming slightly wet, the extent of dampening does not exceed the relative 10 %, the material is sound- proof, elastic and soft to touch.
