ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Treating natural water to retain desired qualities and removing undesirable organics and other contaminants, while at the same time killing microorganisms such as bacteria and virus, is an objective of this invention. The process and apparatus described herein utilize an anion exchange resin in the bicarbo- nate form to remove anions such as chloride, sulfate, nitrate in order to precondition the water to be treated so that silver ions to be subsequently added to the water will be effective as a bactericide, virucide. After preconditioning, the water is fur- ther treated in a media consisting of an activated charcoal bed having silver salt(s) whose solubility product results in a sil- ver ion concentration in water in excess of 50 µg/1 impregnated and adsorbed on the activated charcoal. The silver salt(s) pre- vents: 1) bacterial growth on the activated charcoal bed, thereby self-sanitizing the bed of charcoal, and 2) imparts residual silver ions to the water in and passing through the media The residual silver ions in the water are greatly in excess of the 50 micrograms per liter (50 µg/1) allowed by the Environmen- tal Protection Agency (EPA) Standard for Drinking Water, The high concentration of silver ions in water (800 µg/1 and greater) has been found to be much more effective as a bactericide, viru- cide (i.e., biocide) since it is effective in a matter of minu- tes as opposed to hours or days for silver ions to be effective at a level of 50 µg/1. After the silver ions are added to the water and the resulting water containing the high concentration of silver ions is retained for a holding time of a few minutes, the silver ion level is reduced to 50 µg/1 or less by a second anion exchange resin in the chloride form. The ion exchange resins in both the bicarbonate and chloride forms are also self-sanitized by means of a silver salt wash while being regenerated in the bicarbonate and/or chloride form. Before pretreatment of the input water, suspended so- lids can be removed by conventional filters and the water may be further treated after the silver ion level is reduced to allow- able standards. Further treatment of water following the above described invention with activated charcoal which is self-sani- tized with silver salt(s) which release little or no residual silver ions is also contemplated by this invention.
