A process and composition are provided for removing contaminants, such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, out of exhaust gases by contacting the contaminated exhaust gas with a catalyst/sorber composition comprising noble metal components and a sorber component, such as oxides of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce, Al, Si and mixtures thereof, so as to remove the contaminants out of the exhaust gas. The contaminant-loaded catalyst/sorber composition is regenerated via contact with a mixture of an inert gas, such as nitrogen, and a reducing gas, such as hydrocarbons. The catalyst/sorber composition may also contain a modifier, such as Cu, Ag or Bi, which tends to promote the release of the sulfur contaminant off the contaminant-loaded catalyst/sorber composition as sulfur dioxide, rather than the hydrogen sulfide. The catalyst/sorber composition also promotes the oxidation of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas.
Divulgation d'un procédé et d'une composition pour éliminer des contaminants, comme le dioxyde de soufre et le sulfure d'hydrogène, de gaz d'échappement en mettant en contact le gaz d'échappement avec une composition de catalyseur/sorbant comprenant des métaux nobles et un élément sorbant, comme des oxydes de Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce, Al, Si ou des mélanges de ceux-ci, de manière à éliminer les contaminants du gaz d'échappement. La composition de catalyseur/sorbant chargée de contaminants est régénérée en la mettant en contact avec un mélange d'un gaz inerte, comme de l'azote, et d'un gaz réducteur, comme des hydrocarbures. La composition de catalyseur/sorbant peut aussi contenir un agent modificateur, comme Cu, Ag ou Bi, qui tend à promouvoir la libération du soufre de la composition de catalyseur/sorbant chargée de contaminants sous forme de dioxyde de soufre, plutôt que sous forme de sulfure d'hydrogène. La composition de catalyseur/sorbant favorise aussi l'oxydation du monoxyde de carbone présent dans le gaz d'échappement.
