Waste substances are mixed with an additive containing SiO2 to form a mixed batch which is introduced into a glass melt. A major portion is melted and a minor portion produces an exhaust gas which is introduced into the batch, thereby cooling the gas and producing condensation products which are reintroduced into the melt with the batch.
