ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for produc- ing open-pore sintered bodies of glass having a large open pore volume that is particularly suitable as filter for liq- uids and gases at high flow rates. The invention also pro- vides open pore sintered glass produced by means of conven- tional processes, but wherein at pore volumes of more than 60% there are obtained bending strengths that are too low for use as filter medium. Furthermore, the broad distribution of the pore size and the manner in which the inner surface of the pores is structured are unfavourable for the filtration. The novel process is intended for providing open-pore sintered glass having a large pore volume, high bending strengths and good flow rates. In this process a starting granulated mate- rial of fine-grained glass powder, coarse-grained salt powder and binder is produced first, whereupon 5 to 20% by weight of fine-grained glass powder are added to this starting granu- lated material and this paste is subjected to moulding. The moulded body thus formed is then heated to the sintering tem- perature of glass and sintered, whereupon the salt is washed out of the sintered glass.
